Bertha Sadler Means Young Women's Leadership Academy is among the 12 schools AISD has proposed closing.

KUT hosted a live, one-hour conversation during Morning Edition about the Austin Independent School District's plan to consolidate schools. You can watch the conversation on Facebook or on this page below.

Need a refresher on what the plan entails? Read KUT education reporter Claire McInerny's breakdown of the district's proposal. In short, Austin ISD wants to close 12 schools in the face of declining enrollment. At the same time, it is offering to expand academic programs across the district.

After Morning Edition host Jennifer Stayton was first joined by McInerny; Lisa Goodnow, associate superintendent of academics and social and emotional learning for AISD; and Matias Segura, the district's operations officer.

We then heard from current members of AISD's board of trustees: Geronimo Rodriguez, who represents District 6 and serves as president of the board, and Arati Singh, an at-large board member.

To get some reaction and thoughts about how the school closure plan could impact the city as a whole, we spoke with Austin City Council member Natasha Harper-Madison, who represents District 1 — which is almost entirely in East Austin.

She was joined by Kazique Prince, a senior policy adviser to Austin Mayor Steve Adler and the community schools liaison.

The questions we posed about the plan were submitted by our listeners.
